One of the push-pulls that I’m feeling in my life right now is surrendering to the power of All-That-Is AND setting specific and measurable goals and diligently moving towards those.

This feels like one of those dichotomies in life, such Yin-Yang, Dark-Light, and Good-Bad.

This is Surrender-Focus.

To paraphrase Abraham-Hicks, the perfect mindset in life is simultaneously being content with where you are AND eager for more.

How does this relate to optimal weight and wellness?

It’s loving and appreciating the body you have right now AND wanting to be stronger, fitter, and healthier.

Your choice is not because your body is broken, flawed, or in any way “less than” right now. It is just because that is the life you WANT to create. That is WHO you want to be. That is YOU becoming more.

Doesn’t that feel a whole lot better than feeling horrible about yourself and believing things will get better “if only” you can lose the weight?

Here’s what surrender looks like:

  • It’s loving and appreciating your body just as it is.
  • It’s marveling at how hard your body is working to stay in balance and manage everything you do and put into it.
  • It’s accepting that where your body is right now is perfect.
  • It’s recognizing that your body deserves to be loved right now and allowing yourself to fully and completely love all of you.
  • It’s listening—and responding—to your body’s needs moment-to-moment.

Here’s what focus looks like:

  • It’s deciding what you want your body—and life—to look like.
  • It’s getting to the bottom of WHY you want that body and life.
  • It’s setting a course for getting there.
  • It’s doing whatever you can do right now to make you feel like you are making progress in creating that vision.

Here’s why it can be confusing.

To meet your goals, there is value in planning nutrition and exercise AND listening to your body in the moment about what you should eat and how you should move your body.

What often happens is that you set a goal, create a plan, and if you deviate from the plan at all, you feel like a failure.

Or if you don’t get the results you want and you feel like a failure.

Or you plan so stringently or believe so strongly that there is only “1 right way” that you don’t allow the power of All-That-Is to show you new, easier ways to achieve the body you want.

This can be particularly troublesome when you have past experience of relaxing your focus regarding diet and exercise and you gained weight.

It can feel dangerous to listen to your body or surrender to create optimal wellness.

How do you tap into the power of both surrender AND focus.

  • Accept where you are—letting go of judging where we are physically as good or bad is challenging, but incredibly powerful. Most women feel if they accept where they are, they are telling the Universe “Never mind!” I don’t want that beautiful body. I’ll just accept this broken down model.” But the truth is practicing this mindset actually creates progress towards optimal wellness.
  • Act out of love—When you love yourself, you WANT to feed your body high-energy foods and move regularly. Also loving Source (God, the Universe, All-That-Is, Higher-Coach—whatever works for you) and recognizing that your body is a gift to be taken care of can help you both surrender and focus.
  • Set goals that feel good—pay attention to the emotion that the goals you are setting generate. Is it positive or negative? If it’s positive (i.e. excited, inspired, eager), think of that as a green light to move forward. If it’s negative (i.e. fear, pessimism, dread), recognize that’s a signal to rethink why you want to achieve optimal wellness.
  • Make it fun—what’s the best exercise for losing weight? The one that you will do consistently and actually enjoy. What can you do to make eating healthy and moving your body fun?
  • Count your successes—document and praise yourself for what you are doing well and let go of where you are judging yourself as “falling short.”
  • Know that when you ask it is given—this is a foundation of so many spiritual and religious practices. The key is to ask once and stop asking. Continuing to ask is being fearful that you can’t achieve your goals. It’s not believing that you have been heard, or that the Universe has your back. Instead find a way to tap into your faith that the Universe is on your side and is supporting you in achieving your weight and wellness goals. (And no, your weight is not too trivial a topic for Source! You are meant to feel good!)
  • Appreciate where you are in the journey—so often we believe our life will be better once we meet our goals. But in truth, it is not the achieving of a goal that improves your life, it is allowing yourself to feel better and enjoy life right now.

As you surrender AND focus on success you build positive momentum that will be like a tidal wave moving you towards your goals.
