Don’t Fear the Joy!

“The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe.” Albert Einstein What if the entire Universe is conspiring on your behalf? What if you have tribes of Universal cheerleaders supporting you in every conceivable way? What if no matter what may be happening in your life right now, everything is playing in your favor? If you fully accepted that this is a friendly Universe, would you give up a little control? If you knew everything was working out for you, would you relax and let go of fear? Would you allow yourself to have more fun? Would you allow yourself to take more risks? If you believe that this is a hostile Universe, letting go of control can be one of the scariest things you can do. It’s like putting yourself at the mercy of the enemy. I know because I used to believe the Universe was out to get me. I couldn’t get a break. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was a victim to people and situations. It wasn’t until I began giving up control, surrendering, and trusting my well-being that I began to fully experience the support that was there all along. It’s one of those dichotomy’s of life: You have to give up control to gain it. You have to feel appreciated to be able to receive the appreciation of another. You have to feel beautiful before you can hear and believe the compliments you are given. Whatever you believe—the Universe will provide you evidence of that belief. Open your mind and look for all the reasons everything is working out for you instead of all the reasons it isn’t. Make lists of […]

Do This One Hard Thing to Make Releasing the Weight Easier

The number 1 thing you can do to help release weight—for good—may also be the hardest thing. And it’s NOT dieting and exercising. Research proves you need to do this. My clients swear by it. It was critical for my own transformation. What is this all important element? Getting support! Study after study shows that having at least one person support you in meeting your wellness goals will dramatically increase your chances of success. And working with a support group can boost your weight-loss results by 225 percent! Doctors and researchers from the Department of Nutrition at Harvard proved this when they set out to discover the best diet. They found that all the plans worked about the same. Let me repeat that . . . ALL the diets worked about the same! As long as people lowered their calorie intake, they lost weight and improved their health. On average, participants lost 9 pounds. But one group stood out. They lost an average of 20 pounds. (There’s that 225 percent improvement.) What made the difference? Attending support group sessions. But most women are reluctant to reach out for support. You may feel that dieting and exercise are things you should be doing anyway, and you just need to slap yourself into shape. You may be deeply embarrassed that you have “let yourself go” and don’t want anyone to know how much you are struggling, or how far you have slipped. You may feel that you would be judged by others, or that nobody else would understand the pain and struggle that you go through. You may believe that there is something wrong with you . . . or your body . . . and […]

The Secret to Turbo-Charging Your Weight-Loss Results

What’s been the number 1 factor in my losing the weight—and finally being able to keep it off? I get this question a lot. The answer may surprise you. The most important factor in my maintaining my weight loss has been getting support. Not only support for meeting my weight loss goals, but support and acceptance of Who I am—including the shadow side that many of us want to keep hidden—and encouragement to be the best possible version of me. This is also true for my clients. The fact that support is the key factor is not surprising because research backs that up. When doctors and researchers from the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health set out to discover the best diet, they found that all the plans worked about the same. As long as people lowered their calorie intake, they lost weight and improved their health. What did make a difference was attending support group sessions. Study participants in the support group lost an average of 20 pounds over two years and the people who didn’t have the support lost only 9 pounds over the course of the project. That’s a 225 percent difference! Sometimes, all you need to do to get support is ask! (It’s surprising how many people don’t think to do this.) Tell your partner, family, and friends what you are doing and why, and what you want help with. People are often willing to help you meet your goals. But sometimes, even when you ask, your family or friends—for whatever reason—are not encouraging, or are actually opposed to the changes you want to make. In these circumstances, it’s even more important that you seek out the […]
