Choosing Happiness

I’m happy it’s Friday!

I bet you are, too.

Just luxuriate in that feeling for a moment. Just soak up how good it feels that it’s Friday.

What are all the reasons you are happy it’s Friday? List as many as you can think of. Literally take a moment and write them down.

Wow. Doesn’t that feel good?

That feeling right there—that delicious anticipation of relaxation, fun, connection, whatever it is for you—is benefiting your health and helping you trim your waistline.

While this may sound far-fetched, it’s literally that simple to begin to transform your body.

By focusing on something that makes you happy for as little as 17 seconds, you trigger a beneficial chemical cascade in your body that promotes healing and rebuilding at the cellular level.

It also makes it easier to release weight.

The key is to begin to create that chemical cascade on purpose.

All you have to do is focus more on what is going right, what you do appreciate, how things are working out for you—in other words, things that make you happy.

And you have to do that more than focusing on what causes your body to have a stress reaction. You know you are experiencing this because you feel negative emotions, such as anger, frustration, irritation, pessimism, etc.

Every negative judgment you have about your body, about what you eat, what you should or shouldn’t be doing—is causing a stress reaction in your body that literallymakes it easier to gain and harder to release weight.

Even your desperation to release the weight is working against you. That negative emotion is keeping you stuck in the rebound weight-gain cycle.

The solution?

Completely change the subject to something that does feel good.

Like the fact that it’s Friday.

As you reread your list of all the reasons you are happy that it’s Friday, think of other things that make you happy. Bonus: When you start looking for reasons to be happy, it makes it easier to think of other things that make you happy. This creates feel-good momentum that is helping you achieve your weight-loss goals.

Here’s my list of why I’m happy it’s Friday . . . and how that led to other thoughts of appreciation. (Note how reading my list makes you feel. What impact is it having on wellness?)

I’m happy that it’s Friday because:

  • I get to relax tonight.
  • My husband will be back from a 10-day trip tomorrow and I’m excited for him to be home.
  • I get to sleep in a little tomorrow.
  • I get to focus tomorrow on writing things that will benefit you, my clients—and myself! Nothing is more fun and delicious!
  • My schedule will be more free and I can sit outside or be wherever I want to be.

This leads me to:

  • Love and appreciate my wonderful husband who is incredibly supportive in every way you can think of.
  • Love and appreciate our two dogs and two cats, who are not only stunningly beautiful, but who are the best company during my long days in front of a computer. They are the best companions ever.
  • Love and appreciate my family, who I am fortunate enough to really like and enjoy being around. While there is much distance between us, the time we are together is fun and enriching.
  • Love and appreciate my friends, who are funny, smart, caring, and incredibly attractive! You know who you are!
  • Love and appreciate our home. Not only am I happy to have a roof over my head, but I love that it’s a place I want to be. Aesthetics are important to me and I love that it’s an attractive and comfortable space.
  • Love and appreciate my job. Not only do I appreciate the income, but I am grateful that I love what I do and the people I work with.
  • Love that I get to work from home, one of my favorite places to be.
  • Love and appreciate the beauty of the mountains that I can see from my office window. The view is ever-changing and is so beautiful that it often takes my breath away.
  • Appreciate the sun that is shining and the birds that are singing this morning.
  • Appreciate my body, which is knocking itself out on my behalf to be healthy and vibrant.
  • Appreciate my life and the bounty and beauty that I see when I take the time to look for it.

When you notice that you’re happy or feeling good, harness that emotion to help create the body—and life—you want. Use that one thing that makes you happy to create even more happiness, joy, and good feeling emotions.
