choice point

Here are things you DON’T have to add to your to-do list today:

  • Control the beating of your heart and the blood pumping through your veins.
  • Breathe in and out all day long.
  • Control all the processes going on in your body all day, every day.

Whew.

Kind of a relief isn’t it?

You know none of those are your responsibility, so you don’t carry the weight of them around with you.

Often the things that cause women the greatest struggle, stress, and distress when they are “trying” to release weight are the things they not only CAN’T control, but for which they have no responsibility.

Here are the only things you CAN control in life (even if it doesn’t feel like it right now):

  • What you focus on in any given moment.
  • How you respond to the situations that are unfolding around you.
  • How you respond to the reactions of others.

That’s it.

That’s all you are responsible for.

The items on that very short list may be simple, but they are not necessarily easy.

It takes mental energy to focus and choose your response. There is some willpower involved.

Mastering these few things requires persistence, practice, and patience.

Here’s some tough love for you.

If you are like most women, instead of putting your energy towards mastering those few things you CAN control, chances are you are struggling trying to control all the other things you CAN’T.

Things like:

  • How much the scale will go down every week.
  • What other people think about you.
  • How quickly you achieve your wellness goals.

What often confuses people is that there are things they can influence.

For example, you can influence if your body is well or sick by:

  • The food you eat,
  • The movement you undertake,
  • The thoughts you think.

In addition to mastering the things you CAN control, you must undertake the few actions that are necessary to influence your body towards your optimal weight.

Things such as:

  1. Drink lots (and I mean lots!) of water
  2. Move your body.
  3. Watch your portion sizes.
  4. Choose foods your feel good about eating.
  5. Get adequate sleep
  6. Love Yourself. To do this, practice thoughts that create the beliefs that you CAN be healthy, that you deserve to be healthy, and that optimal wellness is your birthright.

That’s it!

Do those 6 things consistently and you will achieve your weight-loss goals.

The truth is, you can:

  • Influence your metabolism and rate of weight loss, but not control it.
  • Influence your blood pressure, but you do not have to consciously make your heart beat.
  • Hold your breath for a short while, but you will have to breathe eventually.
  • Feel good about yourself, regardless of what other people think.

Really, the actions you must undertake to achieve and maintain a healthy body are pretty limited.

When you let go of all the things you CAN’T control, the few actions you need to take become easier, more doable, and less overwhelming.

And when you allow whatever Power you believe to be behind . . .

  • Controlling the beating of your heart and the blood pumping through your veins.
  • Breathing in and out all day long.
  • Controlling all the processes going on in your body all day, every day.

. . . to support you in doing the things you CAN control and influence, the process of releasing the weight gets even easier—and more fun!

Just for today:

  • Let go of those things, experiences, or people that you can’t control, and for which you are not responsible.
  • Let go of the worry and stress you have about those things, experiences, or people.

Then figure out those few actions that you CAN take that will move you towards the body you want. Then do those things well.

By releasing the weight of the things you CAN’T control . . . you immediately feel lighter.

It actually gives you the energy to do more of the things that you CAN do.

The bottom line?

Practice letting go of what you CAN’T control, and enjoy doing the few things you CAN.

Together we can do it!
