progress

You just ate a cookie. (OK 5.)

Now What?

Often, the women I work with think things like, “I’ve blown it. I might as well eat whatever I want.”

Or your try to get back on track but feel your self-control slipping away.

Or you just give up altogether.

It’s a familiar place and it feels hopeless.

You may feel that not being “perfect” on your diet or exercise program means starting over from the beginning.

The resulting negative assault on your mind, body, and spirit feels terrible!

Even if it’s not out-and-out mental self-abuse, there is probably a slight undercurrent of negative thoughts and feelings (guilt, worry, helplessness, self-doubt, blame) that results from your less than stellar food choices.

Pay attention to these thoughts and emotions!

You have to be aware of them to shift them. This is how you ultimately break the rebound weight-gain cycle—for good.

Often, it’s helpful to acknowledge that optimal wellness is about taking care of you for the long-run.

Yes, you want to lose weight as quickly as possible, but your wellness goals will not end there.

What are the reasons you want to release the weight once and for all?

Maybe you want to rock a swimsuit or little black dress.

But it goes a lot deeper than just wanting to look good.

  • Maybe you are tired of watching from the sidelines as your family has fun without you.
  • Maybe you want the health and vitality to play with your pets, kids, or grand-kids.
  • Maybe you want to be the best wife, mother, friend, daughter, sister, etc., you can be.
  • Maybe you just want to consistently feel good physically.
  • Maybe you want the strength and stamina to live the robust life you envision—hiking, traveling, adventuring.
  • Maybe you want the energy to start that business you’ve been dreaming of, or to go after that promotion, or get that degree.
  • Maybe you know deep down that you aren’t fully living up to your potential, and want more energy to live the fully vibrant life you intended.

When your reasons become heartfelt and your wellness is more than just losing the weight, you begin to see the journey towards reaching your optimal weight with more clarity.

You see that a few cookies is the equivalent of a short detour.

If you give up, down a pint of ice cream on top of it, or feel like you have to start from scratch, you never get very far beyond the starting line. You are traveling the same stretch of road over and over again.

Don’t stop!

Take the detour and keep going! Step by step. Moment-by-moment. Decision-by-decision. Day-by-day.

You do NOT have to be flawless to meet your short and long-term wellness goals. What matters most is that you are making progress. You do that just by picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and keeping on going!

Yesterday is done. Forget about it. Focus on the choices you are making right now.

Yes, the weekend may be challenging as you are out and about with the kids, are at a party, out to dinner, or just out of your week-day routine.

But you absolutely DO have the ability to make the best possible choices you can make.

And if you don’t, pick up where you are and keep going. As Tony Horton says, “Do you best and forget the rest.”

Begin to give yourself more credit for what you ARE doing to reach your wellness goals.

  • Did you make better choices on a work trip?
  • Did you get in any physical movement or exercise?
  • Did you drink more water than usual?

Count it. Count it all!

You can also practice affirmations like:

  • I have the ability to make good decisions about what, when, and how much I am eating—and I follow through with those decisions.
  • Consistently making those small decisions to eat healthy foods and move my body pays off so much.
  • I am looking forward to physically feeling good and being in alignment mind, body, and spirit.

As Abraham-Hicks says, “A belief is just a thought you keep thinking.”

Begin practicing new thoughts about your wellness journey and soon you will not only believe you can do it, you will KNOW it!

Together we can do it!
